In order to respond to the lack of solid, reliable and updated information about the transportation and mobility sectors of the region, CAF has launched an Urban Mobility Observatory (SMO) for Latin America and the Caribbean, which began with the analysis of 15 metropolitan areas  in nine countries of the region.

The Institution identified technical indicators, then collected and analyzed data for the 15 selected cities. Furthermore, it created the 2007-2008 Data Bank  and implemented dissemination mechanisms.

Additionally, the program published its first OMU Report and prepared the book Urban Mobility in Latin America and the Caribbean, a publication that will provide a broad overview of the mobility characteristics and conditions  in the analyzed metropolitan areas.
