Food security in Latin America and the and the Caribbean: Challenges, strategies and priority actions
This event aims to identify challenges, strategies and urgent coordination actions needed to promote food security in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Humanity is going through one of the most complex scenarios of modern life, in which the COVID-19 pandemic continues to give signs of activity after more than two years and, simultaneously, a war with global repercussions breaks out, this context increases existing inequities and inequalities, very accentuated in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Estimations carried out by the FAO and the World Food Program (WFP) in 2021 show that between 2019 and 2020, the number of people who suffered from moderate to severe food insecurity in Latin America and the Caribbean increased by more than 60 million people, while in 2020 moderate or severe food insecurity affected 41% of the population in Latin America and the Caribbean, in other words 270 million people, well above the world average, which is 30.4%.
In such a scenario, it is urgent to debate the answers to foster social resilience and strengthen food security and sovereignty in a sustainable way. In this meeting, the panelists will identify challenges, strategies and urgent coordination actions in the short, medium and wide term in the different dimensions of food security and nutrition, all of the above with the purpose of supporting the countries of the region to face this phenomenon, a goal that drives us to continue working in a coordinated way with leading agencies and other actors in civil society.

Sergio Díaz-Granados has extensive experience in public and private service, both nationally and internationally, with special emphasis on regional development and integration issues. Before assuming the presidency of CAF, he served as Executive Director for Colombia at the Inter-American Development Bank. He previously held the positions of Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism of Colombia, Vice Minister of Business Development and President of the Boards of Directors of Bancóldex and ProColombia. He also has been a congressman and chairman of the Economic Affairs Committee of the Colombia’s House of Representatives.

(Ecuador) his trajectory, with more than 50 years of experience in the public and private sectors, has been marked by ideas of progress, dedication to his country and his family. He has written two books: "Letters to my children" and "Another Ecuador is possible", in which he reflects in each letter the stages of his life and his political ideals, correspondingly. In addition, in 2011, he received an Doctorate Honoris Causa from the University of the Americas for his professional career and achievements. He founded Ecuador Libre, a think tank that promotes individual freedom, justice, the free market, private property, and the rule of law. In order to serve Ecuadorians, he founded the Creando Oportunidades (CREO) party. In 2021, he succeeds the Presidency after having participated as a candidate in 2013 and 2017.

Christian Asinelli is a political scientist from the Pontificia Universidad Católica Argentina (UCA), has a Master's degree in Public Administration and Policy from the Universidad de San Andrés (UdeSA) and postgraduate degrees in Urban Economics (Universidad Torcuato Di Tella) and in Sociourbana Management (FLACSO). In 2019, he received his Ph.D in Political Science from the National University of San Martín (Argentina).
During the last sixteen years he has been appointed in different roles in the public sector and the international arena: Alternate National Director of the State Modernization Project at the Chief of Staff of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Nation (2005); Deputy of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (2007-2010); Undersecretary of Evaluation of Projects with External Financing of the Chief of Staff of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Nation (2011-2014); Corporate Director of Institutional Development of CAF (2014-2017); President of the Fundación Banco Ciudad (2019) and Undersecretary of International Financial Relations for Development, Secretariat of Strategic Affairs, Presidency of the Nation. He was a Fellow of the Hubert Humphrey Fellowship Program (2010), the Special Program for Urban and Regional Studies-MIT (2011) and the Singularity University Executive Program (2017). He is the author of the books Buenos Aires: The city we have, the city we want (Buenos Aires, 2009); Modernization of the Argentine State: policies, management and professional scene (Buenos Aires, Edition, 2015) and Financing Development: The role of multilateral banking in Latin America (Buenos Aires, 2021).

A lawyer and career Ambassador, she has a post-graduate degree in Diplomacy from the University of Oxford and specialized studies at Harvard University, the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania and the International Academy for Peace. She was Foreign Minister of El Salvador, Minister Counselor at the Embassy of El Salvador in Washington D.C., Alternate Representative of El Salvador to the UN and General Director of Foreign Policy. He is a member of the Advisory Council of the Latin American Program of the Woodrow Wilson Center and of the United Nations Latin American Program for Development. He is a fellow of the Central American Leaders Initiative by the Aspen Institute and is a Young Global Leader alumni by the World Economic Forum. He has received decorations from the Governments of Spain, Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Guatemala, Costa Rica and Panama.
