Funding for the Government of Barbados as part of water sector agenda
The Project aims to support industry planning and improve the quality, reliability and efficiency of Barbados’ drinking water systems, benefitting 82,000 residents.
CAF—development bank of Latin America—provided USD 10 million in financing to the Ministry of Finance, Economic Affairs and Investment in an effort to promote planning and improve the quality, reliability and efficiency of the island nation’s drinking water systems.
The Project is aligned with CAF’s comprehensive water cycle management strategy. It targets specifically efficient resource management, aiming at developing infrastructure that positively impacts the quality of services, reducing system losses and high consumption.
The project will be implemented by the Barbados Water Authority (BWA) and includes components such as the development of the drinking water master plan, investment in tank and reservoir rehabilitation, reactivation of drinking water networks, among others, as well as institutional strengthening.
This project is co-financed by CAF and the European Investment Bank (EIB), and will benefit an estimated 82,000 people in Barbados.
According to CAF executive president Luis Carranza, the funding granted to the Barbados Infrastructure Rehabilitation Project is aligned with our regional strategy and agenda for the water sector, which in 2019 enabled access to better water supply to approximately 3 million people in Latin America. This intervention reflects CAF’s commitment to the infrastructure sector and sustainable development, which is particularly relevant to Barbados today, where we are confident we will contribute to capacity building and reducing the cost of access to water in the short term.”
