Call for research proposals on Demographic and Technological Trends, Labor Markets, and Health and Pension Systems in Latin America

The relatively rapid aging process Latin American countries are facing bring challenges for social security provision and threatens countries’ fiscal sustainability. A main concern is the impact of the aging process on health and pension systems’ levels of expenditure in a context of region’s high informality rate and the ongoing technological changes on the demand for labor.  For this reason, CAF launched a call for research proposals with the aim to understand the impact of demographic and technological trends over labor markets and health and pension systems. In this opportunity, the jury decided to award three proposals out of 158 received from several countries.

The selection committee included Ana Balsa (Universidad de Montevideo), Andrés Erosa (Universidad Carlos III de Madrid), Leonardo Gasparini (Universidad Nacional de La Plata) and CAF researchers (Lian Allub, Fernando Alvarez, Guillermo Alves and Manuel Toledo).

The winning proposals were:

  • Age-dependent Payroll Tax in Emerging Markets: A Quantitative Assessment for Ecuador by Carlos Uribe-Terán (Universidad San Francisco de Quito), Diego F. Grijalva (Universidad San Francisco de Quito) and Ivan Gachet (World Bank).
  • The Value of Free Health Insurance Schemes in Developing Countries by Gabriella Conti (University College London), Rita Ginja (University of Bergen) and Renata Narita (University of Sao Paulo).
  • More to Live for: Health Investment Responses to Expected Retirement Wealth in Chile by Grant Miller (Stanford Center on Global Poverty and Development), Nieves Valdés (Universidad Adolfo Ibañez) and Marcos Vera-Hernández (University College London)

Each winning proposal will receive USD 15 thousand for its development.

Call for research proposals on Human capital formation and youth access to high-quality employment in Latin America

The ratio of young people to the working age population in Latin America is still relatively high. The demographic dividend offers a set of opportunities that could contribute to socioeconomic development in the region. To take advantage of these opportunities, it is key to have a well-trained youth, possessing a wide set of skills that enable them to adapt to a changing environment, such as that produced by technological change in labor markets. However, these opportunities coexist with phenomena such as school dropout and skill mismatch in labor markets, which have high incidence in our countries.

For this reason, CAF launched a call for research proposals with the aim to promote knowledge accumulation on human capital formation and youth access to high-quality employment. In this opportunity, the jury decided to award nine proposals out of 185 received from several countries.

The selection committee included Eva Arceo-Gomez (CIDE), Hugo Ñopo (ILO) and CAF researchers (Fernando Álvarez, Lucila Berniell, Dolores de la Mata and Ricardo Estrada).
