The Board of Directors of CAF, Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean, approved an A/B loan of up to US$500 million for Gas Natural de Lima y Callao (Cálidda). Cálidda is Peru's leading natural gas distribution company, and currently provides access to a cleaner, safer, and more affordable energy source for approximately 9 million people in Peru.
"This operation reaffirms CAF's commitment to an inclusive and sustainable energy transition in Latin America," said Sergio Diaz-Granados, CAF's executive president. "By supporting the expansion of natural gas in Lima and Callao, we are not only promoting access to cleaner energy, but we are also generating economic and social development opportunities through the collateral benefits of the developed infrastructure, especially to vulnerable communities in this important metropolitan region."
The main objective of the loan is to support Cálidda in financing the expansion of energy infrastructure, with the goal of deploying additional kilometers of distribution networks to benefit 900,000 new people with natural gas service by 2030. This expansion is crucial to meet the growing energy demand in Lima and Callao, a region that concentrates 10 million inhabitants in an area of 40,000 square kilometers. In addition, this loan will allow Cálidda to refinance part of its current receivables that originally served for the deployment of the natural gas distribution network. Additionally, it incorporates the monitoring of the Company's corporate sustainability commitments, including maintaining an ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) rating at levels above the industry average, as well as monitoring the CO2 emissions intensity of the Company's infrastructure in its operations, so that it does not exceed the thresholds outlined in its corporate objectives. On the other hand, it also incorporates the monitoring during the period 2025-2030 to the connections of new dining rooms within the Cálidda 2.0 Popular Dining Room Program, led by women entrepreneurs, as well as women benefited by Cálidda scholarships for professional technical training.
Finally, the A/B Loan seeks to mobilize resources from renowned international entities that support Cálidda's initiative in Peru, contributing to the attraction of financing and investment flows to the region .
This approval is part of CAF's comprehensive strategy to promote sustainable energy infrastructure in Latin America and the Caribbean, simultaneously contributing to economic growth, social inclusion and environmental protection in the region.
