The upwelling zone of the Humboldt Current is one of the richest marine environments on the planet, which is why Peru and Chile are among the top ten fish-producing countries in the world. This ecosystem provides more than 20% of global fish catches and supports over 1,000 species. Given its high biological productivity and coastal location, there is significant human intervention in this region from industrial and artisanal fishing, oil activities, and the development of densely populated coastal areas.
