The objective of the project is to improve the traffic conditions of the Guayaquil road network, by reducing the operating cost of users, congestion, traffic accidents, fuel consumption and travel time while improving socioeconomic and environmental aspects of the city.
The San Eduardo tunnels provide a new road link which connects - through two 3.75-km tunnels - the 4.5 Km interchange with Avenida Barcelona and from there to the west and southwest of the city. The work will decongest traffic from the north, northeast and northwest of Guayaquil which reaches about 4,500 vehicles at peak times.
The total cost of the work was US$73.6 million, for which CAF granted a US$35-million loan; the remaining funds were financed from municipal contributions.
