July 11, 2023

CAF made firm its commitment to regional integration and updated its name to CAF -Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean. It is a strategic move that aims to expand its presence in the region to strengthen integration processes. One year ago, CAF opened its regional office for the Caribbean in Trinidad and Tobago, which allows this international bank the opportunity to provide greater support for economic recovery and sustainable development.

CAF and the Caribbean Make it Official

CAF has an ambitious agenda to promote sustainable and inclusive development in the Caribbean. Today its Board of Directors approved projects that total USD 845 million and will improve access to water, reduce transportation times, provide more opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in microfinance and foreign trade; and will promote public policies on gender, inclusion and diversity.

CAF aims to become the premiere green bank in Latin America and the Caribbean. To do this, it will allocate USD 25 billion over the next five years for green operations that promote climate action and the preservation of biodiversity.  To complement this aim, CAF joined the coalition of multilateral banks led by the IMF to expand climate financing and support the establishment of the first blue and green bank in the world, which will be headquartered in Barbados.

CAF’s President, Sergio Diaz-Granados, affirmed that, “The Caribbean is a region that inspires us: Its history, the legacy of its ancestors, the richness of its culture, its biodiversity, the talent of its people, its competitive advantages. Fully confident of the potential of this region, at CAF we are committed to continue amplifying its voice and that its leading role before the world becomes much more established and that it is recognized as a region of solutions to global challenges.”

President Diaz-Granados recently joined other global leaders at the 47th Heads of Government Meeting to commemorate CARICOM’s 50th anniversary in Trinidad and Tobago where the Treaty of Chaguaramas was signed in 1973. In 2022, CAF established its Regional Management Office for the Caribbean in Port of Spain, Trinidad, and appointed an experienced Caribbean national, Dr. Stacy Richards-Kennedy, as Regional Manager for the Caribbean.
