The development bank of Latin America offers a rapid and timely response in continuing to support Bolivia in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic and in its people’s well-being, with better road connectivity, improving their quality of life and promoting regional competitiveness and integration.

More than 3 million people in Bolivia will benefit from support for the COVID-19 vaccination plan, as well as strengthening the emergency health system, thanks to the approval of a USD 130 million loan by the board of directors for CAF—development bank of Latin America.

This operation complements CAF's other efforts to support the region's health systems and is part of the Sectoral Credit Line for the Support and Strengthening of Health Systems, approved at CAF's Board of Directors meeting in March 2021 for a total of USD 1 billion. This line was designed to contribute to CAF's shareholder countries in strengthening their health systems in a flexible and timely manner, recognizing and promoting the measures that governments are applying to mitigate the impacts on the health system as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Supporting the COVID-19 vaccination plan and expanding health system capacity is essential in saving lives and is one of the most efficient public policies to promote social and economic reactivation. We are also pleased to continue supporting Bolivia’s road development with the divided highway between Confital and Bombeo. This will also facilitate trade with Brazil and Chile, while continuing to promote regional integration," said Sergio Díaz-Granados, CAF’s executive president.

At the CAF Board of Directors’ CLXVIII meeting, a credit extension from USD 88 million to 176 million was also approved for the construction and paving of a second road on Fundamental Road Route No. 4, between Confital and Bombeo, 44.6 kilometers in length and located in the Cochabamba region, directly benefiting approximately 33,000 people.

The project is part of the east-west corridor, which is one of the most important axes for regional, political and economic integration in Bolivia, and contributes to integrating the country with Brazil and Chile. The sections prior to Confital - Bombeo in the Caracollo - Colomi corridor are already in operation, thus providing continuity to a strategic project for the country.
